I created this portfolio website back in 2018. The goal was to create a modern website that was technologically simple, content-forward, and lightweight (oh and also cheap to host ;]). To achieve this I used then-new HTML5 standards, I also chose to favour CSS-based solutions over JavaScript or JQuery solutions wherever possible. This philosophy has had many benefits over the years. Everything is built on established standards, and new web browser updates don't break things. Since the code base is small, there is little to go wrong.
There are many alternatives to rolling your own in this day and age (WordPress/squarespace/wix/etc) and using them does provide many advantages. But in the long term they are often more expensive, blend in, and due to their complexity can be more work to keep secure. They also tend to use more resources both to render, and host; whereas a site like this can run with little despite being content-heavy: https://www.websitecarbon.com/website/alwyn-tech/
